When people hear that you’re a coach, they probably imagine you strutting around like you’ve got life figured out; all zen, effortlessly motivating everyone, and living your best life. Cue the highlight reel, right? But let’s face it: the reality of coaching is a tad messier than that.

Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of building a coaching practice from scratch, the wins, the wounds, and maybe even a few awkward moments (because who doesn’t love a good cringe story?).

The Good: Purpose, Transformation, and Impact

First, let’s chat about the good stuff because, believe me, this journey has a lot more beauty than you might think. As a coach, you get to:

– Witness transformation. There’s nothing quite like seeing a client bust through their limiting beliefs, grab their courage by the horns, and start living their truth. It’s like watching a caterpillar do a dramatic butterfly transformation minus the actual creepy-crawly part.

– Live in alignment. When coaching feels like your calling (as terrifying as that might be), every session turns into a flow state where you forget that you technically have a job. It feels less like work and more like a surreal mix of ministry and magic.

– Make a difference. Whether you’re helping a woman rediscover her confidence, guiding a mom to put herself back on the map, or supporting a leader who’s hanging on by a thread, you’re basically a superhero, cape optional.

– Grow personally. The cool twist? Every time you coach someone else, you get pushed to confront your own messy habits and beliefs. It’s like a self-improvement boot camp you didn’t sign up for.

The truth about coaching

The Bad: Doubt, Comparison, and the Slow Build

Now, let’s get real for a second. Here’s what doesn’t make it onto your Instagram feed ( Follow me on Instagram):

– Starting is hard. You’ll wonder if your pricing is as outrageous as a fancy coffee shop. You’ll ask yourself if you’re even “enough.” And sometimes, you’ll launch a program with all the excitement of a kid on Christmas morning, only for the crickets to serenade you.

– Imposter syndrome is no joke. In those early days, you might think, “Who am I to coach anyone?” It’s like being a kid thinking they can teach adults how to ride bikes. Spoiler alert: You can!

– It’s not instant. Building a client base and crafting that killer message? Total marathon, not a sprint. Take a deep breath and maybe a snack while you’re at it.

– Comparison can be cruel. Watching other coaches soar while you’re still figuring it all out can hit you like a ton of bricks. Remember: they probably had some awkward moments, too, but those don’t make the highlight reel.

The Ugly: Burnout, Discouragement, and the Temptation to Quit

Okay, now we’re getting to the part that can feel gritty.

– Dry seasons will happen. Imagine crickets chirping where your client inquiries should be. In that silence, self-doubt can feel like it’s got a megaphone.

– Burnout is real. You might find yourself saying yes to every opportunity like you’re collecting Pokémon cards. Spoiler: Over-delivering and undercharging don’t make you a hero; they make you exhausted.

– Rejection alert! People will ghost you. Friends might not bat an eyelash. Some will watch but never engage. Ouch!!.

– Quitting seems tempting. On tough days, you might question everything — why did you even think you could do this?

The Redemption: Why We Keep Going

Even amidst the struggles, coaching is sacred work. It’s more than just clients and catchy content; it’s a calling that doesn’t always come gift-wrapped with a bow. Sometimes it means surviving on caffeine and quiet moments of self-reflection. But let me hit you with some wisdom:

– Every low point teaches you something.

– Every client is a walking miracle.

– Every ‘no’ is just one step closer to that right ‘yes.’

Coaching isn’t just what I do; it’s who I’m becoming. And I’m slowly learning to embrace all the messy bits. So, to the newly minted coach: keep going!  To the weary one: take a break, but don’t hit that quit button.  And to those thriving: don’t forget to reach back and help someone else up.

This journey isn’t a smooth path but a wild ride for those brave enough to stick it out. And yes, that’s totally us.
